Play Therapy Katie Maher

Play Therapy

Play therapy is a way for children to express and explore their emotions, thoughts, and experiences through play. Recognizing that children may have difficulty expressing themselves verbally, play therapy utilizes toys, games, art, and other creative activities as mediums for communication. I utilize interactive and non-directive methods, to address a variety of issues, such as trauma, anxiety, grief, or behavioral challenges. Play therapy not only facilitates emotional expression but also helps children develop coping skills, improve social interactions, and enhance their overall well-being. As a therapist I observe and interpret the child's play behavior, gaining valuable insights that guide the therapeutic process and promote positive growth and development.

Family Therapy

Family therapy focuses on the dynamics and interactions within a family system. I work with families to explore and understand communication patterns, roles, and relationships among members. Family therapy emphasizes collaboration and encourages open communication to foster a healthier family environment. I use various techniques, such as structural interventions, strategic interventions, and narrative therapy, to help families develop more effective communication skills, resolve conflicts, and build stronger connections. Family therapy recognizes the interconnectedness of family members and aims to promote positive change.

School Observations

Conducting thorough observations in the school environment, allows me to have insight into a child's interactions, social dynamics, and overall functioning. This can be helpful to identify specific challenges, triggers, or areas of concern. Interventions are then tailored to address these issues, often involving collaboration with teachers, parents, and school staff. I implement strategies to enhance the child's coping skills, social interactions, and emotional regulation. Therapists may work closely with educators to create a supportive and inclusive environment that accommodates the unique needs of each child.
